20/02/2009 Daisetsuzan---Big Snow Mountain
Japan rose from the sea in seismic violence(地震的暴力). Tectonic plates(构造板块) slid and were subducted(隐没), mantle rock melted(风化层融化) and pooled underground(地下堆积), volcanoes erupted. Quiet for centuries, Asahi Dake(旭岳), the highest peak in Hokkaido, rises to the north. Tokachi Dake(十胜岳), to the south, last erupted in 2004. In the cold, wet climate of Hokkaido, summits built by Earth’s internal fires draw snow(从地球内部的烈焰中诞生的山峰会带来降雪), and snow turns to rushing water(流动的水), forest, moss, and flower. Daisetsuzan means "big snow mountain." Thick ground cover(植物) makes much of Daisetsuzan impenetrable(无法进入), a self-preserving preserve(保护区), untrammeled(完全无拘无束) except for the few specified trails(步道). In a crowded island country—one of the most indus trialized and densely populated in the world—the park offers rare open space, its peaks and forests bounded by neatly cultivated fields(精心耕作的田野). The park is a haven for deer, birds, hares(野兔), and bears as well as trees, shrubs(灌木), and flowers. Japanese backpackers(背包客) move in silent respect(无声的敬意) through the massif. Occasionally in the summer and fall, Michiko Aoki(青木伦子), the daughter of a Buddhist priest(住持), hikes eight hours up and over Asahi Dake, crosses a windy ridge(多风的山脊), and descends into a secret valley to visit her boyfriend, who helps monitor the park's Hokkaido brown bears. Early on a warm autumn day, I join her. As we approach Asahi Dake, the hollow breathing of volcanic vents tells us there is a mountain ahead, but, cloud-wrapped, it eludes us(从火山道传来的低沉声音告诉我们前方有一座山,藏在云深不知处). In the mirrored face(如镜的水面) of a pond called Sugatami-ike(姿见池), a distant patch of snow mingles(交融) with steam; strings of steam tie Asahi Dake to the kamuy, the Ainu spirits(阿依努神灵) that live everywhere. During the glacial maximum 18,000 years ago, Hokkaido was linked by land bridges to Asia, not Japan, and the ancestors of the Ainu people crossed to Hokkaido. Few indigenous Ainu remain, their forebears having been dispossessed and assimilated by the Japanese. Yet it is impossible to look at these rivers and mountains without thinking of their sacred view of the place. The Ainu divided their lands into village gathering grounds, or iwor, where they fished for salmon, hunted bear, and gathered wood and berries. The living things that sustained them were gods in disguise, spirits visiting the earthly world. Kamuy came as inanimate objects as well: hunting knives and bamboo houses. To return kamuy to the spirit world, the Ainu performed rituals, with gifts of food and prayer. Their central ceremony honored the bear—provider of food, fur, and bone for tools. They called Asahi Dake peak Nutap-kamui-shir, which means "the god mountain which contains the inside area of the bend of the river." Asahi Dake used to be a perfect cone, but an eruption long ago blew out its flank. The path skirts a chaotic cleft torn by eight sulfur-collared vents issuing steam. An 80-year-old man coming off the mountain tells us that during World War II people gathered the yellow mineral for gunpowder. Michiko and friends, a more fortunate generation, ski the concavity in winter. Now the path is steep with lingering patches of snow. Above, cloud swallows mountain; volcano swallows cloud. Finally the top of Asahi Dake stands clear. Weekend hikers crowd the summit. They eat ham sandwiches and rice wrapped in seaweed, drink cold tea, and rest rock-sore feet. Fewer come here than to many of Japan's 29 national parks, far fewer than to Mount Fuji. That iconic peak draws a hundred million visitors a year. Daisetsuzan sees just six million, many of whom arrive by bus to soak in autumn's colors. Others test themselves on the slopes of Asahi Dake.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The failure of the bailout package in Congress literally dropped jaws on Wall Street and triggered a historic selloff -- including a terrifying decline of nearly 500 points in mere minutes as the vote took place, the closest thing to panic the stock market has seen in years.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 777 points Monday, its biggest single-day fall ever, easily beating the 684 points it lost on the first day of trading after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. As uncertainty gripped investors, the credit markets, which provide the day-to-day lending that powers business in the United States, froze up even further. At the New York Stock Exchange, traders watched with faces tense and mouths agape as TV screens showed the House vote rejecting the Bush administration's $700 billion plan to buy up bad debt and shore up the financial industry. Activity on the trading floor became frenetic as the "sell" orders blew in. The selling was so intense that just 162 stocks on the Big Board rose, while 3,073 dropped. The Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 Composite Index recorded a paper loss of $1 trillion across the market for the day, a first. The Dow industrials, which were down 210 points at 1:30 p.m. EDT, nose-dived as traders on Wall Street and investors across the country saw "no" votes piling up on live TV feeds of the House vote. By 1:42 p.m., the decline was 292 points. Then the bottom fell out. Within five minutes, the index was down about 700 points as it became clear the bill was doomed. "How could this have happened? Is there such a disconnect on Capitol Hill? This becomes a problem because Wall Street is very uncomfortable with uncertainty," said Gordon Charlop, managing director with Rosenblatt Securities. "The bailout not going through sends a signal that Congress isn't willing to do their part," he added. While investors didn't believe that the plan was a cure-all and it could take months for its effects to be felt, most market watchers believed it was at least a start toward setting the economy right and unlocking credit. "Clearly something needs to be done, and the market dropping 400 points in 10 minutes is telling you that," said Chris Johnson, president of Johnson Research Group. "This isn't a market for the timid." Before trading even began came word that Wachovia Corp., one of the biggest banks to struggle from rising mortgage losses, was being rescued in a buyout by Citigroup Inc. That followed the recent forced sale of Merrill Lynch & Co. and the failure of three other huge banking companies -- Bear Stearns Cos., Washington Mutual Inc. and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., all of them felled by bad mortgage investments. And it raised the question: Which banks are next, and how many? The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. lists more than 110 banks in trouble in the second quarter, and the number has probably grown since. Wall Street is contending with all of it against the backdrop of a credit market -- where bonds and loans are bought and sold -- that is barely functioning because of fears that anyone lending money will never be paid back. More evidence could be found Monday in the Treasury's three-month bill, where investors were stashing money, willing to accept the tiniest of returns simply to be sure that their principal would survive. The yield on the three-month bill was 0.15 percent, down from 0.87 percent and approaching zero, a level reached last week when fear was also running high. Analysts said the government needs to find a way to help restore confidence in the markets. "It's probably fair to say that we are not going to see any significant stability in the credit markets or the stock market until we see some sort of rescue package passed," said Fred Dickson, director of retail research for D.A. Davidson & Co. The bailout bill failed 228-205 in the House, and Democratic leaders said the House would reconvene Thursday in hopes of a quick vote on a revised bill. "We need to put something back together that works," Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said. "We need it as soon as possible." The Dow fell 777.68 points, just shy of 7 percent, to 10,365.45, its lowest close in nearly three years. The decline also surpasses the record for the biggest decline during a trading day -- 721.56 at one point on Sept. 17, 2001, when the market reopened after 9/11. In percentage terms, it was only the 17th-biggest decline for the Dow, far less severe than the 20-plus-percent drops seen on Black Monday in 1987 and before the Great Depression. Broader stock indicators also plummeted. The Standard & Poor's 500 index declined 106.62, or nearly 9 percent, to 1,106.39. It was the S&P's largest-ever point drop and its biggest percentage loss since the week after the October 1987 crash. The Nasdaq composite index fell 199.61, more than 9 percent, to 1,983.73, its third-worst percentage decline. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 47.07, or 6.7 percent, to 657.72. A huge drop in oil prices was another sign of the economic chaos that investors fear. Light, sweet crude fell $10.52 to settle at $96.36 on the New York Mercantile Exchange as investors feared energy demand would continue to slide amid further economic weakness. And gold, where investors flock when they need a relatively secure investment, rose $23.20 to $911.70 on the Nymex. Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald, said investors are worried about the spread of troubles beyond banks in the U.S. to Europe and other markets. "Things are dying and breaking apart," he said. The federal Office of Thrift Supervision, one of the government's banking regulators, indicated that the market was overreacting to the House vote and that its fears about the financial system are misplaced. "There is an irrational financial panic taking place today, and we support and applaud the continuing efforts of Secretary Paulson and congressional leadership to restore liquidity and public confidence," John Reich, Director of the federal Office of Thrift Supervision, said in a statement. The plan would have placed caps on pay packages of top executives that accepted help from the government, and included assurances the government would ultimately be reimbursed by the companies for any losses. The Treasury would have been permitted to spend $250 billion to buy banks' risky assets, giving them a much-needed cash infusion. There also would be another $100 billion for use at the president's discretion and a final $350 billion if Congress signs off. But Wall Street found further reason for worry overseas. Three European governments agreed to a $16.4 billion bailout for Fortis NV, Belgium's largest retail bank, and the British government said it was nationalizing mortgage lender Bradford & Bingley, which has a $91 billion mortgage and loan portfolio. It was the latest sign that the credit crisis has spread beyond the U.S. Business Writers Joe Bel Bruno in New York and Christopher S. Rugaber in Washington contributed to this report.

1997年 《Batman and Robin》。
2008年 《Batman - the Dark Knight》讲述Batman追求正义的故事,依旧由Christopher Nolan执导,Christian Bale出演Batman,Heath Ledger扮演Joker,Aaron Eckhart扮演Harvey Two-Face。
2008年Batman的宣传海报上——Welcome to the World without Rules——宣传语非常嚣张,非常真实,淡化了漫画感。
06/06/2008 Try to Remember
24/05/2008 A true story in Wenchuan EarthquakeSince the Wenchuan Earthquake happened, I've been moved by many many pictures, stories... I translated this one into English to share with the world because mother's great love is the same all over the world.
【Moved by mother's great love】
A mum died, with her 3 months's baby under her body, and she left words on the mobile phone...
She has died when the rescuer found her. She was overwhelmed by crushed house. Through gaps of those ruins, we can see her last posture. Being on her knees, the upper part of the body was prostrate forward, with her hands on the ground to support body. That was something like an acient who was kowtowing, just looked eerie because she was out of shape by pressure.
The rescuers confirmed her death by touching her through the gaps of ruins. They shouted at the ruins again and again, knocked the bricks using the crowbar, but no response inside.
Then the rescuing team went to next building, suddenly the leader ran back, calling "come here". He came to the body, stretched his hands under the woman, feeling and touching, then shouted loudly "there is someone, a baby, still living".
Through some efforts, rescuers cleaned up the ruins carefully which blocked her. Under her body, lied her baby, who was wrapped in a small red quilt with yellow flowers scattered in red. He is about 3 or 4 months' old. Since well protected by mother's body, he is totally safe. He was sleeping on both ears when the rescuer carried him out, and his lovely and peaceful face warmed everyone around him. The doctor along with the rescuing team unfastened the quilt to check if the baby is all right, and he found there was a moible phone filled in the quilt. The doctor looked at the screen subliminally, a written message was already there "my dear baby, if you could live, don't forget how much I love you". As a doctor, he experienced too much of parting for ever; but at this moment, he wept. The mobile was passed, every person who saw this message sheded tears.
